7. Animation, Timeline, and Keyframes

Basics of 2D animation in the Grease Pencil object

Jumping into animation, we must familiarize ourselves with the timeline and keyframes.

1. Getting Started with Animation

  1. Switch to Draw Mode: Get back to draw mode, where you have your materials and can begin drawing.
  2. Frame by Frame Animation: Traditional animation style.
  • Draw a stroke.
  • Observe the timeline. Each dot represents a keyframe.
  • You start at frame one.
  1. Auto-Key:
  • Found below the timeline.
  • When off, no new keyframes are created as you work.
  • When on, every action you perform creates a new keyframe.
  • Example: Drawing on a new spot creates a new keyframe.

2. Working with Layers

  1. Switching between Layers: Create a new layer to maintain clarity in your work.
  2. Relocating Art to New Layers: In edit mode, if you wish to place an element on a new layer:
  • Select the element.
  • Hit M.
  • Either move it to an existing layer or create a new layer.

3. Locking Layers

  • Useful when you want to focus on one layer and avoid accidental edits on others.

4. Animating

  1. Ensure auto-keying is on.
  2. Each action performed will create a new keyframe. It helps to maintain a smooth transition between frames in the animation.
  3. Copy keyframes and paste them where needed to create repetitive motions.

5. Adjusting the Timeline

  • Set start and end frames to control the duration of the animation.

6. Animating in Different Modes

  1. Edit Mode:
  • Movements, rotations, and any other adjustments will create new keyframes.
  • Adjusting thickness of strokes will be confined to the new keyframe without affecting others.
  • Auto-Keying Off: Modifications apply to the last registered keyframe.
  1. Sculpt Mode:
  • Adjust and manipulate shapes.
  • Use the smooth modifier to refine the lines and avoid pixelation.
  • Toggle off selection mask to apply edits to all layers.

Caution: Directly manipulating the animation in this manner (especially without locking layers) can be considered a 'destructive' method of animating. It hard codes the movement, making future changes potentially more challenging.

Debugging Glitches

Occasionally, you might notice odd behaviors in your animations, such as unexpected lines.

  • Determine when and where the glitch appears.
  • One approach to fixing this is deleting the problematic section and redrawing it.
